Akshaya Patra NGO in Uttar Pradesh feeds over 150,000 children a day

NGO for Children

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is an NGO in Uttar Pradesh and nine other states in India that provides the nutritious school lunch programme to Government schools across the country. Being one of the non profit organizations for children, the Foundation has done a lot of work to uplift and alleviate suffering among children in India. With a humble beginning in the year 2000 feeding just 1,500 children in 5 schools in Bengaluru, today the Foundation feeds over 1.4 million children from 10,845 schools. From this the mid day meal in Uttar Pradesh is served to 150,663 children in 1,983 schools in the state. Akshaya Patra runs two kitchens in the state, one at Vrindavan and the other at Lucknow.

Akshaya Patra started as an NGO in Uttar Pradesh in the year 2004 with the opening of its Vrindavan kitchen. The Foundation is one of the most famous non profit organizations for children and has achieved this status through its high quality of food for the children. The Vrindavan kitchen adheres to these strict food safety and quality standards, and has consequently received ISO 22000:2005 certification, the international standard for food safety management systems. The mid day meal in Uttar Pradesh is partly served through this kitchen which reaches out to 139,262 children across 1,874 schools in the region. This is one of Akshaya Patra’s most famous kitchens and has been visited by many famous personalities over the years.

Akshaya Patra Kitchen

The NGO in Uttar Pradesh opened its second kitchen in the state recently with the launch of the Lucknow kitchen in March 2015. The kitchen serves the mid day meal in Uttar Pradesh to just 11,401 children across 109 schools currently, but has the capacity to increase its feeding over time.

Both the kitchens in the state follow the centralised model. These are large scale units that have harnessed the power of technology to cook food for thousands of children in a just a few hours. Fitted with huge cauldrons to cook rice and dal (dried pulses), roti making machines capable of cooking up to 60,000 rotis (Indian flatbread) in an hour and much more, the centralised kitchens have served as case studies to reputed organisations across the world for the operations processes implemented. This is just one of the factors that have made Akshaya Patra one of the most well respected non profit organizations for children.

The non-profit organization in UP works to provide tasty and nutritious food for the children on every working day of school. So, the children have an incentive to attend school. Through the lunch programme in Uttar Pradesh, the children receive the nutrition that is crucial to their growth and also receive the education that will transform their lives, lifting them from their cycle of poverty and hunger.

You can support one of the most honourable non profit organizations for children and help end classroom hunger in India. Make a donation to the foundation to help and build good life for the underprivileged children of India.
