Since inception, mid-day meal programme has bought many dreams alive and it has also given the strength to fulfil millions of aspirations across the nation. This national programme to provide free mid-day meal to children at all Government schools has encouraged many parents to send their children to school. The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a NGO in India working towards serving mid-day meal to children across 23 locations covering 10 states.
There are innumerable Akshaya Patra success stories. These stories are eye opener of how children from even the most underserved background have big dreams and aspirations. These children overcome many hurdles to reach school and aim towards achieving their goals. The mid-day meal is a way to sustain these hopes of brave hearts. Here is an anecdote of one of the Akshaya Patra success stories from Telangana.
With the aspiration of becoming a lecturer, Nousheen, a student of Standard IX of the Zilla Parishad High School, Medak district, Telangana, believes that dreaming big is an important part of life. She is known in the class to be a bright and kind student. As an Akshaya Patra beneficiary she loves khichdi (rice and lentils) that is provided as a part of the mid-day meal. Her elder sister Afreen too is an Akshaya Patra beneficiary and studies in Standard X in the same school. Afreen suffers from a hand deformity due to which her right hand is not mobile. Afreen feels conscious about this disability but Nousheen’s compassion towards her makes her comfortable. Despite being younger, Nousheen encourages Afreen to be strong and not confined indoors due to this disability. Nousheen also helps her elder sister with homework and mother with household chores.
