Akshaya Patra stories of children from Puri

Tales are many but when it comes to Akshaya Patra stories of children, each of them are unique. Currently, Akshaya Patra serves mid-day meal to children of 10 states covering east, west, north and south of India. Odisha is one among the serving states of Akshaya Patra. The NGO in Puri, Rourkela, Cuttack and Nayagarh. The Foundation began its journey as NGO in Puri in June 2006 and presently feeds 55,835 children across 648 Government schools in and around Puri.

One of the many Akshaya Patra stories of children, here is an anecdote of Kalpana Malik from Puri. Kalpana is a 10-year-old girl studying in Standard V at Vijayanagar Project Primary School, Puri. Her father is the only breadwinner of the family and works as a beach photographer whereas her mother is a homemaker. Kalpana is the youngest of the four sisters. Kalpana is a talented child and her teacher affirms it by saying, “Kalpana is good both at academics and extra-curricular activities, especially dancing and singing.” Kalpana is energetic and exudes self-confidence. She admits that she is very fond of coming to school and her favourite subject is English.

Kalpana aspires to be a doctor and reasons out that presently the patients outnumber available doctors indicating that there is shortage of medical professionals. A well-thought reason indeed. Talking about the food she gets at school, Kalpana says she loves the Akshaya Patra meal because it is always fresh and it always reaches school on time. To this Kalpana’s teachers add, “The mid-day meal is one significant factor that is bringing children to school; and that in turn is allowing the children to receive the goodness of nutritious food and education.”
